Who Needs a Closet Anyway? When You Can Have This …

These nooks and niches are FAR more exciting than any ol’ boring closet!

Imagine it … take the doors off a closet … add some trim cut to shape, or hang some curtains … add paint … you can make these happen. You can always get a freestanding wardrobe for storage. Why not do this? Why be stuck with the expected … when you can have the unexpected …

Nooks n’ Cubbies for Sleeping

There’s already been plenty of blogging about sleeping nooks. Words that people use again and again to describe them: cozy, snuggle, escape, dream, safe, curl up, charming … and … “I want one!”

Why not make one? Essential ingredients to a cozy, dreamy, safe escape where you can snuggle and curl up and read and sleep:

  • Encircled on three sides by walls, built-in cabinets, curtains, etc.
  • A bonus: capability to close off the fourth side and truly hide out
  • Lots and lots of pillows
  • Blankets, of course
  • Thick plush surface to lounge or lay on
  • A light within arm’s reach
  • A solid flat surface nearby to set essentials on, such as a drink

Here’s some examples. Found on Brittany Havican blog and pinterest:

As you can see already, nooks can be created in wildly varying styles and have the ability to enwrap you in a hidden little world. Here’s another from Houzz:

What fantasy nooks, huh? But here’s the thing — they’re real, they exist for somebody who created them. Want one? You can make one too.

Here is my favorite, which I blogged about previously:

Many people believe that bigger is better, leading to homes with living spaces  the size of office atriums. And the character of office atriums too, because after mortgaging for the expansive space, unless your investments are particularly well-endowed, there isn’t much left to add much architectural character. Such as carve out little nooks n’ crannies within larger spaces where people can feel comfortable. Even in expansive spaces, people do seem to seek the cozy areas and crave the character in our surroundings. Why is that? Must be something biological, I would think.

Below are nooks that people have created, and then other people have photographed, and more people have pinned and blogged and discussed, and here I am carrying it forward. Because I am thinking of ways to build little nooks into our India apartment. Such as, breakfast nooks …

From BHG Kitchen Bath Ideas:

There are nooks for hanging out with friends and family. This is in a restaurant in Bangkok, from Dwell:

Or this, a very different nook style from the image above, from Houzz:

Or this from Decoratrix (notice how these are all by big windows):

A nook for sharing stories of travel and intrique, from Houzz:

There are nooks for solitude. Such as this from Houzz:

And this from Katrin Arens:

If you don’t have a nook area that’s physically separate from larger rooms,  you can use a tall screen to carve a private cubby space, like this shown at Houzz:

You can’t find me? Here’s why, I’m hiding out in a cubby like this from The Lettered Cottage:

A nook for reading and solitude found at Niki Jones:

If you don’t have window seats or bay windows in your home, you can create some with built-in cabinets that frame a window, leaving a generously-deep seat to cuddle in. Such as this one shown at DigsDigs:

I am thinking of building the wardrobes in one of our India apartment bedrooms to allow a window seat, perhaps in the guest room where early morning risers can enjoy a view. House of Turquoise featured this one:

Here’s another window seat found at Purple Area:

And a miniature nook shown at Rusted Wood and possibly the New York Times which featured this home:

A small upstairs nook space found at The Decorologist:

And of course, sleeping nooks! It seems natural that humans want a safe, protected place to sleep when we’re at our most vulnerable. There are so many wonderful sleeping nooks shared online, I’ll put another post together of those. Until then, nighty night, sleep tight …

A Space

No, not “a space.”

“A” space. A space shaped like an A. Like A for Attic. Or A for A-frame.

A-shaped areas can feel cute, cozy or even like a childhood wonderment, depending on how they’re decorated. Any way they are, I like ‘em. So go ahead, venture in, see how these rooms make you feel. Be careful, don’t bump your head …

Anyone know the source of this image? Found on pinterest from a tumblr site with a name I’m just not going to write on my blog (if I bumped my head hard on one of these sloped walls, I might yell it!). So consider this from pinterest for now:

Do you have an A-shaped space in your home? Do you have somewhere you could make one, perhaps by raising or removing a ceiling? This seems to be one of those nooks n’ cubbies in homes that draws in people, like there’s some human need here.
